TMS offers an active area of research. TMS research has been explored as a possible
treatment for psychiatric disorders other than depression, including treatment resistant
auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and PTSD.
At Washington University, the Psychiatry department was one of multiple national
sites involved in the clinical trial that led to the FDA approval of TMS for the
treatment of depression (see article below). Washington University has also investigated
the use of TMS to treat postpartum depression demonstrating efficacy in a small
sample (see article below). Likewise, the ENT Department has used TMS applied to
the temporoparietal, as well as left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex to treat tinnitus.
